Description
The Trade and Public Health Workshop has become one of the WTO flagship activities focusing on cross-cutting issues, with inputs from several substantive divisions in the WTO Secretariat. It is organized in close collaboration with WIPO and WHO, as part of the Trilateral Cooperation. The Workshop explores the links between trade and public health in a holistic manner and its overall objective is to build capacity to analyse, undertake policy choices and foster coherent decision making.
Participants will be exposed to WTO disciplines related to public health, as well as to the work undertaken by the WIPO and the WHO. The combination of round-table discussions, presentations by experts from different disciplines and case studies is designed to stimulate interaction and experience sharing. In particular, the workshop will cover key factors that influence innovation and access in the pharmaceutical sector, including: public health determinants; intellectual property rights; pricing and procurement policies; competition policy and rules; tariffs, quotas and licensing; and health services. A separate section will deal with regulatory issues, including the approval, quality control and effectiveness of medicines, the protection of clinical test data under the TRIPS Agreement and health-related measures in the TBT and SPS Committees. This will be complemented by a series of discussions dedicated to specific, cross-cutting themes linking trade agreements to topical issues, such as non-communicable diseases, and a field visit to a manufacturer of medical devices.
