Description
The objectives of the course are to: (i) provide an overview of the accession process and procedures; (ii) familiarize participants with accession-specific documents that relate to certain WTO disciplines, e.g., checklists, questionnaires, and Legislative Action Plans; (iii) provide explanations of the WTO legal disciplines at issue in selected sections of accession Working Party Reports, including recurring/typical commitment paragraphs; and (iv) prepare the participants for negotiations with Members concerning such commitment paragraphs.

As part of the WTO procedures, a letter of invitation, along with an application form, will be addressed to the relevant government authorities, through established channels.
Thirty (30) places are available for applicants from WTO Acceding Governments that are WTO TA beneficiaries. The costs related to their participation (a return economy class airplane ticket, a terminal expenses allowance, and daily subsistence allowance, including lodging) will be borne by the WTO.
The participants will be selected based on the information submitted. Only candidates officially nominated by their national authorities and presented by their Permanent Mission to the WTO will be considered. Applications received through other channels will not be acknowledged.
Priority will be given to candidates from acceding governments with active Working Party processes.
Pre-requisite
Candidates should: (i) be experts on accession negotiations with an enhanced knowledge of WTO legal rules; (ii) possess knowledge of the basic WTO principles and the WTO accession negotiations process; and (iii) understand the structure of a Working Party Report and be generally familiar with commitment paragraphs. Candidates should successfully have completed a WTO training activity, such as the E-Learning modules on "WTO Accessions" and "Introduction to the WTO"; or have commensurate knowledge and professional experience. Candidates should possess an excellent ability to communicate in English both orally and in writing.
