Topical issues at the crossroads between intellectual property and other policy dimensions

Objective: At the end of the activity, participants are familiarized with current activities and developments at WIPO and WTO, as well as other relevant international organizations, with respect to topical issues at the crossroads between intellectual property and other policy dimensions, such as health, climate change, digital transformation, business, etc.

Category: Enhance the capacity of government officials to operationalize and correctly implement provisions of one or several WTO Agreements

Indicators:
  • Indicator: Participants opinion

    Evidence: In general, participants commented that the Course comprehensively discussed all IP aspects and current issues. Participants commended the wide range of topical issues; the focuses on AI and public health; and the adequacy of coverage generally.

  • Indicator: Participation – frequency and quality of the interventions / questions raised, contribution to group work

    Evidence: Many participants were very engaged during the Q&A sessions and the Zoom chat.

Conclusion: The objective was achieved to a large extent in light of participants' opinions and the fact that 100% rated quality of lectures as "Very Good" or "Excellent". Furthermore, 54% of participants felt that the Course fully met expectations, whereas 43% felt the Course moderately met their expectations. Further, 71% of participants were of the view that the Course was very relevant for meeting their professional needs as IP policymakers charged with designing and implementing IP policies.

Design and implementation of IP policies

Objective: At the end of the activity, participants are updated on key instruments, policies and factors relevant for the design and implementation of IP policies and the related legal framework and to build capacity to make full use of the IP system and its policy options in order to effectively respond to domestic objectives and needs.

Interactive dialogue and network

Objective: At the end of the activity, participants are provided with a platform for an interactive dialogue with Secretariat representatives, external speakers and other participants and to establish a network among senior government officials.

    Evidence: 96% of participants commented that they are interested in joining the relevant LinkedIn group for alumni of the WIPO-WTO IP Advanced Course. Further, a number of participants commented along the lines that the Course gave them an awareness of interactions needed with delegates of other countries in order to deepen discussions and align views. In addition, some participants commented that they are now better placed to handle policy issues during negotiations and meetings, especially at the WTO.
