Description
The Regional Workshop on the WTO Agreement on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures is organized by the WTO. The three international standard-setting organizations referenced in the SPS Agreement, i.e., the Codex Alimentarius Commission, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), and the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) will also participate in this workshop with lectures and exercises in their respective fields of expertise.

The workshop will be tailored to the specific characteristics and needs of the region, encompassing, inter alia, the main provisions of the Agreement on SPS, the work of the SPS Committee, transparency and technical assistance.

It will combine lectures, exercises and interactive dialogue aiming at the exchange of experiences and positions among the different countries and institutions involved.

Pre-requisite
The WTO will select a maximum of 30 participants for the regional SPS workshop. The officials are required to:(1) hold responsibilities in the area of SPS within their Governments, i.e., SPS enquiry point, IPPC contact point, Codex contact point and the OIE delegate; as well as an official from a relevant Ministry in charge of trade and agriculture issues; and  (2) possess a proven understanding of the basic features of the WTO, especially of the SPS Agreement. Preference will be given to those candidates that have successfully completed the E-Learning Course on the SPS Agreement by the time they submit their application.
