Activity Type

Description
This activity consists of participation in two key sessions within the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), which brings together parliamentarians from the 183 member parliaments of the IPU, as well as observer organizations and regional parliamentary assemblies. The engagement supports the delivery of Technical Assistance Plan Result 4 by strengthening legislators’ understanding of the multilateral trading system and promoting informed parliamentary engagement on trade policy.

The GRULAC geopolitical group (Latin America and the Caribbean) has dedicated a segment of its meeting to global trade issues and the work of the WTO, with the objective of raising awareness and strengthening knowledge among parliamentarians from the region. The WTO representative participates in this session to provide an update on the outcomes of MC14 and highlight the most urgent trade and WTO issues of relevance to the region, helping build stronger understanding and support among legislators. The intervention is delivered in Spanish.

The WTO representative also serves as a resource person in the IPU Standing Committee on Sustainable Development, which debates and finalizes the resolution entitled “Building a fair and sustainable global economy: The role of parliaments in combating protectionism, reducing tariffs and preventing corporate tax avoidance.” This builds on the WTO's contribution during the previous IPU meetings and represents a continuation of the Committee’s work as the Assembly moves toward adoption of the resolution, whose draft text reinforces the value of the multilateral trading system and key WTO reform priorities. The intervention is delivered in English.
