Title of the activity
National Capacity Building Activity on Trade and Environment
Activity Type
National
Description
Context: This national activity, requested by the Government of Indonesia, is part of the WTO Secretariat's visit to Indonesia from November 4 to 8, 2024. While the Indonesian Government has been actively engaged with the WTO Secretariat under the Action on Climate and Trade (ACT) framework— a pilot project initiated by the WTO in collaboration with the World Bank and the World Economic Forum—since its inception, the Ministry of Trade has noted the importance of conducting a technical assistance to selected government trade officials to better link trade and trade-related policies with environmental protection policies. Thus, the Ministry of Trade of Indonesia seeks to leverage the Secretariat's November visit by organizing a specialized capacity building training on the intersection of trade, environment, and climate change.

Objectives: The two-day capacity-building activity aims to: (i) increase awareness of the potential for policy coordination between trade and environmental protection, including at the domestic, regional and multilateral level; (ii) review the WTO's past and ongoing work on trade and environment, including at the Committee on Trade and Environment, as well as other Members' trade and environment initiatives; and (iii) examine relevant WTO disciplines and case law on trade and environment.
